Towpath Closure 15 Jan - 9 Feb
BW will be working on the lock flight from 15th Jan to 9th Feb. Except for the bottom lock, the flight will be de-watered and (to comply with more stringent safety rules) the towpath will be closed to prevent the public from falling in!!
The section closed will be from immediately above the bottom lock (allowing access to the shop) to the top lock. It will still be possible to cross the various bridges but access to the towpath from them will be barred.
Plans are afoot (again) to develop the land near the Marina
which used to be the old railway station. Twelve detached houses
are proposed with access from the A45. Some land is retained as
a natural habitat and access is maintained at the western end
of the site to what might become a cycleway along the old railway
line.

Northamptonshire Trading Standards have two pieces of advice:
1. Always ask a doorstep salesman for the phone number of his company. At present be alert to a scam selling water purifiers and wanting to come inside to take a sample.
2. Advice about shopping on the internet can be found at www.tradingstandards.gov.uk

The Braunston Twinning Association organised a fun quiz in
aid of their funds - and fun it certainly was. |

The questions were set by "InQUIZition" covering a wide range of topics. Each team of six was kept busy for over two hours. |
|
In the end it was a close-run thing with the winners just one point ahead of the runners-up. We now know who the brains are - the chair and vice-chair of the Parish Council along with the two editors of "Braunston Village News" and their wives! |

Penny Crowder, the Area Development Worker for LIAG, writes:
"As Area Development Worker for LIAG, I have available information
about learning opportunities, college courses as well as careers
advice and information software, which you can use, to help you
with career choices and ideas, training and quaiifications.
"Whether you are employed but thinking of a change, not in employment but thinking about the future, or on a career break and thinking about updating or improving your skills/qualifications, this is an opportuniy for you to find out about courses and training opportunities, and to identify the kind of courses that people might want to be offered locallv. I am in close contact with the local education providers and they are keen to develop their work in the wider community and rural areas.
"If you are interested in having an informal chat about your situation at present and your ideas for the future, please give me a call on 01327 300232 ext 330 and I can arrange to see you in the Village Hall."

Village Computer
Services Expand
The trial period for Internet access was due to end in April 2000
but a grant has been received to enable free access to
continue for a further year. Funds were also provided to buy a
colour printer and this has now been installed.
NOW there is an Information
Officer and a second computer
The council has appointed Nick Thompson as Information Officer (initially for six months); he will work in the Village Hall Library between 6-30pm and 9-30pm each Thursday. He will be there to guide anyone needing help with any aspect of computing or the Internet by telling them about local courses and services. [At present it is not practical to offer any type of formal course in the Village Hall Library itself.]
In addition to the Thursday session, there will be Internet/computer sessions each Tuesday evening between 6-00pm and 8-00pm (except 26/12). These will be manned by volunteers.
A second computer has been installed; this will not provide internet access but will have a useful range of other software including MS Office 2000 Professional and is available to those who are familiar with the software. [It may be some time before all our helpers are able to assist with all of this new software !!!]
Those who are are already familiar with the software and equipment
can use it at other times when the hall is open (except when there
is a meeting in the library).

The really good news is that Planning Consent has now been received for the redevelopment. The Village Hall Committee has been working hard for many months on plans to improve our Village Hall. The plans have been approved, and you can read all about it (including various ways in which you can help), but the main concern is to raise the necessary funds. Village Improvement scheme re-instated
After much consultation with villagers and planning by the Planning Department the scheme to do improvement work in the village was almost ready to go when Local Council Elections resulted in the whole scheme being scrapped. The principal parts of the scheme were a) a road realignment to force traffic to slow down when entering the village (details), and b) restoration of a large section of pavement along the High Street.
It was thought that the money already budgeted for this had been redistributed to other villages around Daventry. However, a recent statement from the Council says, "£196,000 has been set aside for the Braunston village improvement scheme. Work is due to start in February 2001."
Originally promised for the summer, work started during the first week of November.
At first a few red patches appeared on the road, and then the
word "Slow" was added. [Is there really any need to
rub it in? !!]![]() |
|
And then suddenly a plethera of posts appeared, some still waiting
for notices to be added. The bendy road sign below can just
be seen between the posts supporting our new village sign (left). |
But now they have done this. "I
don't believe it!" |
||
History
After months of pressure by the Parish Council, the Highways Agency
came up with some improvements to the A45. Among the proposals
were:
"Reduce Speed Now" plates with yellow backing boards,
"SLOW" painted on the road together with a red road surface,
new staggered junction warning signs at the Marina entrance,
and, possibly, movement of one of the bus stops.
There is no proposal to reduce the current speed limit which is 60 miles an hour.
Additional safety changes have been proposed including changes to the lining of the Old Road/Marina area and changes to the village name signs to slow traffic and warn of bends.

If its dangerous - tell Clarence Clarence (see right) is Northamptonshire's new helper and works(?!) with the Highways & Traffic Partnership. If you find a hole in the road, a damaged pavement, a blocked road drain, a faulty street light or failed traffic lights then get in touch with Clarence. You can phone him on 0800 23 23 23 between 9am and 5pm or send him full details by email. |

GeNIE is the Northamptonshire InformationExchange.
This is an information system giving a lot of information about
facilities in the county. It can be accessed (by the public) in
all the County's libraries as well as via the internet.
This website, together with those from a few other towns and villages,
has been added to this county database. It is worth a quick visit
just to see what is on offer.
